Kelly Slater has countless accolades to his name.
He has 11 World Titles; he is the oldest and the youngest surfing world champion; he’s the undisputed GOAT of processional surfing; he created (debatably) the world’s most perfect man-made wavepool, arguably altering the future of surfing as we know it.
And that’s just the Spark Notes version of Slater’s life and career.
Over the years, outside of surfing, he’s picked up hobbies, too. Hobbies like playing guitar. Like strumming an acoustic at his North Shore of Oahu home, sitting in his front yard watch, amd watching the waves.
But sometimes, it’s more than just strumming chords on your own to pass the time, and sometimes, being a big name in your own respective discipline curries big names in others.
Hence this clip above from Nalu Films.
It features Slater playing music with Eddie Vedder, the frontman for Pearl Jam, at the Opening Ceremony of the 2006 Eddie Aikau Big-Wave Invitational.
Reposting the clip to his own Instagram Story, Slater wrote:
“Little story here… @pearlam played for a Land Trust benefit in @waimeavalleyoahu in 2006 for about 400 people a night before playing with @uz. @eddievedder invited me on stage and surprised me with this guitar with the SL8R logo made into the guitar as a present for my 8th world title. Halfway through the song I looked down and saw the logo and was stoked. After the song I realized the & was actually for me. nalufilms I should post more of these stories.”
So, keep in mind, next time you show up to Pearl Jam gig (are they still touring?), who knows…Slater might show up and play the lead to a song.
