This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea, a two-day festival on Molokai to celebrate the Hawaiian youth, culture and the community of watersports.
Two days of racing, including the renowned Maui to Molokai channel crossing, is open to all water crafts, paddlers and ages in one great weekend: July 8th – 9th, 2022. Join the celebration of youth either in person or virtually for this special event. All proceeds benefit Youth In Motion, supporting Molokai’s active youth and community lifestyle.
Two Epic Races July 8th-9th, 2022: Celebrating Youth in Watersports
Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea, on the Hawaiian islands, is a combination of two great days of ocean paddling and wind events.
Friday, July 8th is the Maui to Molokai 27-mile downwind channel crossing (a.k.a. “M2M”). This 20th annual race is a spectacular rite of passage for many watersports athletes around the globe featuring a 27-mile downwind crossing of one of the famous Hawaiian channels.
Saturday July 9th, the Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea features a 10-mile race, 5-mile course and a 3/4-mile options for the kids. Open to all types of watercraft, ages and levels of ability.
Both of these events combined into one great weekend offer an immersion into our water culture and community of Hawaii as well as an awareness of the beautiful Molokai environment and celebration of healthy lifestyles. Welcome back, Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea!

Molokai Holokai Weekend Schedule: LIVE and VIRTUAL
Friday 8th, July 2022: M2M Challenge & Kaunakakai Harbor Clean Up
Don’t miss Gorilla Ogo and the Mangrove Seed Contest earlier in the day. There will be lots of fun prizes for kids who gather the most! Participants can register online or at the harbor ferry area. Sign up early as the first 50 kids to register receive hats!
Paddlers arrive at Kaunakakai Harbor for the start to the Maui to Molokai race. This channel crossing is for athletes with experience and skill to navigate the channel. Fastest crafts are expected to reach the pier on Maui around 12:00PM-12:30pm.
Saturday 9th July, 2022
Sunday marks the return of the Molokai Holokai Kamalo Run which includes 10-mile, 5-mile and 3/4-mile courses. All water crafts and ability levels are welcome!
Timeline:
9-10:00AM: Check-in at Kamalo.
11.00AM 10-mi race Stand Up Paddle START.
11:30AM 10-mi race Foil and Outrigger Canoe START.
11:45AM 5-mi short course START.
12:00PM Live music starts. Food is open to the public. Cheering on our local paddlers.
1:30PM Keiki and Makua Race Check-in.
All kids check-in at Molokai Community Health Center
2:15PM Keiki and Makua ¾ mile race.
Mowat Homestead to Molokai Community Health Center = 3/4 mile.

Molokai Holokai Global Challenge Week : Celebrate VIRTUALLY!
This year’s Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea offers an exciting possibility to bring our water community even closer than ever. Want to celebrate our youth? Now, you can do it right from your HOME WATERS and be a part of this world wide festival to celebrate our watersports community and culture.

Join the global virtual event open to all watercrafts: SUP, Ski, prone, foil, wing, OC-1, OC-2, and more.
Virtual Challenge Day 1: Complete 16 miles. This can be broken up to separate runs. i.e. 2 x 8 mile runs or any combination thereof.
Virtual Challenge Day 2: Choose the 10 miles, 5 miles or the ¾ mile for family and kids. This mileage can also be broken down into separate runs to complete.
AFTER your VIRTUAL RUN: Upload your times and be a part of the celebration of the Molokai Holokai Ho’olaule’a – ‘A Celebration of Youth Opportunities’.
Celebrating Maui’s Youth & Supporting Young Water Athletes
Youth in Motion began this event for two young boys back in 2003 who wanted to cross the channel windsurfing. The following year another young boy and his friends joined in. Kai Lenny, Connor Baxter and Zane Schweitzer later went on to do great things in the ocean world from windsurfing to stand up paddling, and – later still – foiling, big wave surfing and wing foiling to become great ambassadors for our ocean sports today.
The Molokai Holokai Hoolaulea event is centered around inspiring Maui’s youth with a fun race, but not a world championship race. Instead, this race takes us back to our roots in Hawaiian culture and is a race where we can all have fun. This race is about coming together no matter our age to celebrate our youth, especially here on Molokai.
Molokai has always been known as a premiere venue and one that is world caliber level for ocean channel racing. World class events from Maui to Molokai and Molokai to Oahu using outrigger canoes to stand up paddleboards is a race for the bucket list and goals among many world champion watersports athletes.
Youth In Motion: Celebrating Youth & Hawaiian Culture
In the Molokai Holokai, the goal is to have fun and race our fellow competitors and the clock for the fastest record; however, at the same time we remember our roots in sport in order to inspire the youth, our future leaders of tomorrow.
2022 marks the 20th year since Molokai Holokai began! The event organizers look forward to hosting a special two days of racing, community and culture. They are also excited to encourage world wide fellow paddlers and wind lovers who cannot make the trip to Hawaii this year by celebrating the Virtual Molokai Holokai Global Challenge. Join in from where you are and become a part of the celebrations.

Racers can rent gear on Maui or Oahu from any of the paddle stores.
Molokai Outdoors will have a few boards to rent on Molokai but jump on them fast as they will get sold out soon!
