A dramatic rescue at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, has captured national attention after a 16-year-old high school lifeguard plunged into raging, 10-foot shorebreak to save a struggling 10-year-old boy over the weekend.
Fueled by heavy El Niño hurricane swells, towering waves caught beachgoers off guard, sweeping the young child directly into violent rip currents.

As monster waves smashed onto the shore, the teenage guard—identified by his mother as only by his first name, Ryder—rushed headfirst into the churning foam. Upon reaching the struggling child, Ryder locked him into a tight, protective hold, ducking under crashing wave crests and gulping brief breaths of air between sets.
Despite being repeatedly battered and dragged backward by heavy whitewater, Ryder refused to let go, fighting his way toward the beach until a second guard and nearby beachgoers helped pull them onto dry sand.
Vander Dussen marveled at the young hero’s incredible resolve under pressure:
“You could see that he had this like gorilla grip and was preventing that young man from being swept back out to the ocean even further.” Reflecting on the sudden danger, Vander Dussen added, “It caught a lot of people off-guard. Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time.”

Ryder’s mother spoke out publicly on social media to confirm her son was the rescuer in the video, expressing immense pride, emotion, and relief over his selfless courage in the dangerous surf.
