“It is startling, and it is scary… trying to understand those hazards is critical for being able to plan for them. Although the chances of this happening in our lifetime is low, it’s important for families to get prepared now.”

On March 27, 1964, the Great Alaska Earthquake struck Prince William Sound. Measuring a staggering 9.2 in magnitude, it remains the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North American history. The mega-quake triggered localized landslide tsunamis and a massive ocean-wide wave train, causing 131 deaths and over $311 million in property damage (equivalent to over $3 billion today).

Tsunami waves reached heights over 100 feet in Alaska fjords, swept away coastal communities, and killed residents as far south as Crescent City, California.

Seismologists emphasize that for the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone, a future mega-event is not a matter of if, but when. Under a maximum magnitude 9.2 scenario, ocean modeling indicates distant tsunami waves reaching 10 to 30 feet could slam outer beaches along the West Coast, creating violent harbor currents and inundating low-lying coastal terrain.

While the recurrence interval for a massive rupture spans centuries, officials stress that understanding these wave simulations is vital to building vertical evacuation structures and saving lives before the next big one strikes.

Like the experts said, chances are low. But still, be prepared.
