A surfer is in serious condition after a shark attack Saturday morning at Cromwell’s Beach on the south shore of Oahu, adding to growing concern after another aggressive shark sighting was reported nearby just hours later.

According to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, first responders were dispatched around 6:30 a.m. after reports of a shark attack near the popular surf and swim area. Officials said a 38-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his lower extremities.

EMS personnel administered life-saving treatment at the scene before transporting the surfer to a local hospital in serious condition.

In a statement, Honolulu EMS said crews found the victim with “serious injuries” and immediately began emergency medical care before the transport. As of Saturday afternoon, no additional information about the surfer’s condition had been released.

Following the incident, Honolulu Ocean Safety officials issued a shark warning after confirming what they described as an “aggressive shark” near the Cromwell’s Beach swim area and surf break.

The concern only intensified when a separate shark warning was issued around 7:20 a.m. at nearby Ala Moana Bowls, one of Oahu’s most iconic surf spots. Lifeguards reported two aggressive sharks moving through the lineup, prompting additional warnings and advisories for surfers and beachgoers.

Officials have not yet identified the species involved in the attack.

While shark encounters remain relatively rare, tiger sharks are among the most common large shark species found throughout Hawaiian waters. The animals are responsible for a significant percentage of documented shark bites in Hawaii and are widely known for their unpredictable and sometimes aggressive behavior.

The back-to-back incidents rattled the local surf community, particularly given the proximity between the attack site and one of the island’s most heavily surfed breaks.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the area, and warning signs have been posted along affected sections of coastline. Ocean Safety officials are advising the public to stay out of the water and follow all beach warnings until further notice.

For now, the focus remains on the injured surfer, who continues receiving treatment after a frightening morning in the waters of Oahu’s south shore.

This is a developing story.
