A team of scientists has uncovered what may be one of the largest hidden geological structures on Earth — a continent-sized “megastructure” buried deep beneath Antarctica.
It’s so massive, in fact, that it’s larger than the country of India. Fun geology fact: India is the world’s seventh largest country (behind Australia) in terms of landmass.
The discovery, published in Nature Geoscience, was made using seismic imaging and advanced geophysical data that allowed researchers to peer beneath the Antarctic ice sheet and crust. The study reveals a vast region of unusually thick and ancient rock extending across much of East Antarctica.
Researchers estimate the buried structure spans millions of square kilometers, making it comparable in size to major landmasses such as India or Western Europe. If exposed at the surface, it would rank among the largest geological features on the planet.
The megastructure is believed to be a craton — an ancient, stable core of continental crust that has survived for billions of years. These cratons form the foundation of Earth’s continents and often preserve clues about the planet’s earliest history.
Scientists say the finding could help explain why parts of East Antarctica have remained relatively stable despite dramatic changes in climate and ice cover over geological time. Understanding the structure beneath the ice may also improve models of how the Antarctic ice sheet responds to warming temperatures.

To put its scale into perspective, the hidden formation is large enough that it could contain multiple U.S. states, the entire country of France, or even several Germanys within its boundaries. Yet it has remained completely concealed beneath kilometers of ice.
The research offers a rare glimpse into a landscape that has been hidden from view for millions of years and highlights how much of Antarctica remains unexplored.
Even in the age of satellites and advanced imaging, the frozen continent continues to reveal extraordinary secrets. What else is out there to discover?
