Last week’s historic swell delivered some of the biggest surf Southern California has seen in recent memory. For surfers, of course, it was a welcomed gift. But for one family visiting Laguna Beach, it became an unimaginable tragedy.
On Saturday evening, family and friends gathered at Treasure Island Beach near the Montage Laguna Beach resort to remember 5-year-old Amada Mia Brown, who was swept out to sea during the powerful surf event. Her body was recovered days later approximately a quarter-mile from where she disappeared.
The incident occurred as large swell and dangerous ocean conditions pounded Orange County’s coastline. Lifeguards throughout the region issued warnings about strong currents, large shorebreak, and hazardous conditions as waves surged well above typical summer levels. At the vigil Amada’s father, Aaron Brown, mourned his child.
“Once we got there, and I saw how big the waves were, I knew that the chances of us finding her were very slim,” Brown said.
The vigil brought together loved ones who shared stories, music, flowers, and memories of a little girl whose life ended far too soon.
“She was full of life, a sweet little baby,” Brown said, remembering his daughter. “She wasn’t afraid of water. She definitely wasn’t. I’m just sad this happened; she didn’t deserve it.”

As the sun set over the Pacific, the gathering focused not on the tragedy itself, but on celebrating Amada’s life.
“We’ve just been listening to her favorite songs, and remembering how sweet she was,” Brown said. “We’re remembering her life, and trying not to focus on the fact that she’s gone. It’s definitely helping me get through it.”

The same swell that drew crowds to beaches and surf breaks across Southern California has now become linked to one of the region’s most heartbreaking stories of the summer.
For those gathered at Treasure Island Beach, the waves have since faded. The memories of Amada, however, will remain.
The tragic incident should also serve as a reminder, a warning, that the ocean holds the power. Always be safe, especially during large swells, and always know your limits.
Rest in peace, Amada Mia Brown.
