Tragedy has struck the scenic coastline of Laguna Beach once again after a 24-year-old man drowned while swimming at the idyllic Crescent Bay Beach on Monday evening.
The fatal incident occurred amidst heavy, El Niño-fueled hurricane swells—most recently amplified by Hurricane Genevieve—continue to generate highly hazardous surf conditions and dangerous rip currents across Southern California shorelines.
According to official reports from the Laguna Beach Department of Marine Safety, officials received a 911 call around 7:28 p.m. reporting a missing swimmer. A witness at the scene told authorities that the young man had been swimming with a friend when he suddenly began struggling to stay afloat against the heavy shorebreak and disappeared beneath the waves. Video of the rescue operations can be seen here, and below:
A massive multi-agency search-and-recovery effort was immediately launched, deploying Laguna Beach Marine Safety personnel, an Orange County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, Newport Beach Lifeguards, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
At 8:13 p.m., members of the Laguna Beach Marine Safety dive team successfully located the submerged swimmer. Emergency responders rushed the 24-year-old to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where he was tragically pronounced deceased.

Sadly, this marks the second heart-wrenching ocean casualty in Laguna Beach this summer season. Back in June, 5-year-old Amada Mia Brown was swept out to sea at nearby Treasure Island Beach when a reported 10-foot summer swell crashed over the shoreline, pulling her and her family into the water. While brave bystanders rescued her mother and brother, the young girl was swept away, and her body was recovered two days later following an extensive aerial search.
As heavy hurricane swells continue to pound the West Coast, ocean safety officials and locals urge all beachgoers to exercise extreme caution and consult lifeguards before entering the water, offering a sobering reminder of the sea’s unpredictable power:
“Never turn your back on the ocean. She can be beautiful and monstrous all at the same time.”
Rest in peace to the 24-year-old swimmer.
