Kelly Slater continues to defy Father Time.
At 54 years old, the 11-time world champion put on an absolute masterclass during day one of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro, securing a phenomenal 9.00-point ride on a monstrous 20-foot bomb at Teahupo’o. Competing as an event wildcard, the undisputed GOAT squared off against athletes less than half his age—namely 23-year-old Hawaiian standout Eli Hanneman—and proved he is still unparalleled in heavy, barreling surf.

Slater reflected:
“It’s sort of like riding a bike, but you forget how gnarly Teahupo’o is. You’ve got to just jump back on the horse out here. I won’t say I started out slow, but I definitely built. Each wave was kind of bigger and better until I maxed out on that 9, and then I had a no-hander after that that was pretty clean.
“I think I had four or five waves, and most of my scores were building until the end. I don’t have anything to prove here, but when you put the vest on and paddle out, you need to feel like you have something to prove, especially in waves like this. I also went out there trying to be relaxed and really in the moment. When you’re not in the environment of competition all the time, it’s not easy to stay in that mindset. I felt like I kind of locked back in during that heat.”

While Slater looked to be in absolute peak form, threading the needle through a massive Tahitian cavern, his younger competitor faced the ocean’s wrath. Hanneman suffered one of the most violent and terrifying wipeouts of the event thus far, underscoring the extreme danger of the End of the Road during a massive swell.
The grueling action resumed briefly the following day on Sunday, but WSL organizers quickly called off the competition as conditions devolved into a chaotic, victory-at-sea mess. The official forecast, however, looks promising for the remainder of the waiting period, pointing toward significant but slightly smaller, more manageable swell size later in the week.
When competition officially resumes, Slater will have his hands full in a highly anticipated Round 2 matchup against three-time world champion and Paris 2024 Olympic viral icon, Gabriel Medina. It’s a monumental battle of the heavyweights that global surf fans won’t want to miss.
Despite balancing a whirlwind of recent life events—including welcoming a new baby daughter, Azumi Moon, with longtime partner Kalani Miller—Slater remains as razor-sharp as ever in a contest jersey. His performance on Saturday at Teahupo’o serves as a stark reminder that, even at 54, Slater’s reign as surfing’s greatest of all time is far from over.
