Brazilian surfer Victor Bernardo and his wife, Johnni, were both hospitalized after a serious car accident in Brazil on Sunday, August 16. Thankfully, both survived but details about their condition, and what recovery looks like from here, are still vague.

According to Brazilian outlet Metrópoles, Bernardo was airlifted to the hospital and was preparing to undergo surgery. Johnni was transported by ambulance, with doctors working to stabilize her condition. The location of the crash and the circumstances that caused it have not been publicly released. The surf world was notified by a the below post from Logan Dulien, close friend of the couple and director of the Snapt series.

Victor is well known in the Brazilian and California surf communities and has built a following of admirers around the world. Born in 1997, VB grew up in Guarujá, São Paulo, and chased the WSL Qualifying Series for a decade before stepping back from competition and relocating to California. He had a very humble start, washing dishes out in the high desert, working hard to earn enough money to go surf. He was soon picked up by Album where a steady string of clips and edits, plus a consistent presence at Lowers, cemented his status as one of the most talented and stylish free surfers in the world.

Although light-hearted and quick to smile, Victor’s commitment and drive is nothing but serious. He’s never been one who needs to drink much or party hard. Rather choosing to stay in shape and ready to surf — one of those bright souls who is able to gracefully thread the needle between work and play.

The surf community responded quickly with a large outpouring of love from across the spectrum and a huge show of respect from some of the biggest names in surf.

Comments came in from friends and fans like, including but not limited to: Mikey February, Italo Ferreira, Mick Fanning, Taylor Knox, Tom Carrol, and many more.

Recovery timelines for Victor and Johnni have not been shared publicly. Victor has been a fixture of SURFER’s coverage in recent years and we are praying for their recoveries. We will keep you updated as the story develops
