The ocean didn’t exactly knock on Nicolas Cage’s door. It took out the driveway.
A massive sinkhole opened Tuesday morning outside Cage’s beachfront Malibu mansion as Southern California continued to absorb the effects of Hurricane Marie’s powerful south swell, high tides, and coastal flooding.
The collapse occurred along Sea Level Drive, where the driveway of Cage’s roughly $10.5 million home gave way toward the beach. The property, which Cage purchased in 2024, sits directly between the Pacific and Pacific Coast Highway.
By Tuesday evening, the hole had expanded to approximately 30 by 60 feet and was about 25 feet deep. A gas main was damaged during the collapse, prompting utility crews to shut off natural gas along part of the street. The city ultimately red-tagged dozens of nearby homes as officials assessed the unstable ground.
Malibu officials attributed the emergency to an “expanding sinkhole” and coastal erosion, warning that conditions could worsen with additional high tides and rain
There was nobody home at Cage’s property, which was reportedly undergoing renovations, and no injuries were reported. Cage’s representatives had not publicly commented as of Wednesday.
Among Cage’s prolific acting career, last year, starred in a psychedelic, sun-soaked thriller called The Surfer. Read our review of the film here.
Back to the sinkhole; it was hardly an isolated Malibu oddity.
Marie’s long-period south swell and elevated tides battered exposed Southern California shorelines throughout the holiday weekend. Forecasters had warned that the combination could produce significant erosion and flooding from Malibu and Point Mugu to Long Beach and Orange County.
In Long Beach, waves pushed into neighborhoods and prompted evacuations along the peninsula. In Dana Point’s Capistrano Beach, at least 14 homes were damaged, with six later red-tagged. Seal Beach also dealt with flooding and damage to its boardwalk
For surfers, Marie delivered the goods. For everyone living at the edge of the coastline, it delivered a reminder: eventually, the ocean collects its rent.
