In a horrific scene that unfolded right in front of terrified beachgoers, a swimmer was killed by a massive Great White shark off the coast of Western Australia.
The victim, understood to be a beloved member of the local surf life-saving club, was enjoying a morning swim with a friend about 30 meters from the shore at Sorrento Beach when the catastrophic ambush occurred.
Witnesses watched in absolute shock as the apex predator—estimated by onlookers to be a staggering six meters (nearly 20 feet) long—tossed the man out of the water.
One witness described the sheer violence of the encounter, stating, “The shark took his friend, dragged him like at the rate of knots out to… and just mauled him. Right, like in front of us.”
Another horrified bystander added, “It was like with a scene off Jaws, where a body is flicked around like a ragdoll.”
As reality set in that this would become a recovery mission rather than a rescue, the victim’s swimming partner collapsed onto the sand in disbelief.
“He was on his knees just yelling out why and, you know, sorry,” a witness recalled to 7NEWS. “He felt bad because he didn’t go back to save his mate. And I said, no, you couldn’t have done that.”

Emergency marine units and helicopters rushed to the scene to conduct a grim search for the body, which stretched into the evening.
The tragedy has sparked anger and frustration among locals, who noted that sharks had been spotted circling the Sorrento waters over the past few weeks. A troubled shark barrier at the beach was previously removed in 2020, leaving many demanding better tagging and warning systems to prevent future attacks.
The fatal mauling comes just days after a surfer lost part of his leg in a separate shark attack near Geraldton. As the search for the victim’s remains resumes at first light, the tight-knit Western Australian community is left grappling with a dark, terrifying reminder of the ocean’s unforgiving raw power.
