A terrifying viral video has captured the moment a gigantic rogue wave—estimated to be a towering 40 feet high—came crashing headfirst into a massive ocean cruise ship.
In the heart-pounding footage shared across social media, passengers aboard the vessel ran for their lives as a dark, aquatic mountain rose out of the ocean before exploding violently against the ship’s deck.

While the exact name of the ship and the specific location of the encounter remain unverified in the original clip, marine experts and seasoned sailors note that the harrowing footage perfectly illustrates the infamous dangers of high-latitude sea routes, such as the notorious Drake Passage in the Southern Ocean.
The video was captured by a man who goes by “Andrii Aboard” online. Andrii describes himself as such:
“I am a Marine Engineer and I have dedicated more than 15 years of my life to the sea.
“Since 2010, I have been working onboard vessels, and today I am part of the cruise industry, responsible for maintaining and operating complex ship systems on board cruise ships.
“Over the years, the ocean has become more than just a workplace it has become a way of life. Thousands of nautical miles, countless ports, different cultures, and amazing people from all over the world.”

Oceanographers estimate that rogue waves can reach heights of 40 feet or more, violently pitching multi-thousand-ton vessels like a toy in a bathtub.
Unlike standard storm swells, rogue waves are extraordinarily steep, unpredictable walls of water that can reach double the height of surrounding waves. Through the ship’s observation lounge, the impending wave may appeare less like water and more like a looming, liquid cliff face before detonating on impact.
“When the ocean wakes up like that, even a vessel weighing thousands of tons can suddenly look very small,” noted maritime observers analyzing the dramatic clip. “Through those windows, the next wave looks less like water and more like an aquatic mountain.”
Despite the terrifying force of the impact, modern expedition cruise ships are heavy-duty engineering marvels built to withstand extreme maritime conditions.
However, for the stunned passengers onboard, the heart-stopping moment served as an adrenaline-fueled reminder of the raw and untamable power of the open ocean.
