At first, I thought I was seeing double, as Jose Postigo and his twin brother Javi popped up on the video call. I first met Jose on the North Shore after he showed a beautiful film during one of the Friday Night Film sessions held weekly at the Center of Radical Education (CORE).

We connected after, and Jose told me he and two of his brothers worked together making audiovisual content, specializing in water, nature, and ocean storytelling. I said the door was open for a story. Once both Postigos were in front of me on screen, I realized Jose and Javi are perhaps the most identical-looking twins I’ve ever seen. Then their older brother Alex joined, and the crew was complete. Beyond the aesthetic similarities, they all share a deep love for the ocean, and they’ve been working together as a formidable creative trio — one that has started offering water photography workshops backed by rave reviews from participants.

After seeing their work, I knew these guys were talented, and it wasn’t hard to see how their passion could make them great teachers and teammates. Although they produce at a professional level, their upbringing wasn’t the classic surf grom childhood.

Hailing from Valencia, Spain, the brothers — Jose, Javi, and Alex — grew up on the water, sailing and fishing. Once they learned to surf, their view of life on the water expanded.

Yes, there are barrels in the Mediterranean. The Postigo brothers know where to find them,

Fast forward a few years, and they’d not only logged an impressive body of work, they’d started teaching others through immersive workshops across Spain and the Maldives. Level 1 is an introduction to water photography in the Mediterranean. Level 2 dives into surf photography and everything that comes with it. Level 3 is the deep end — a full week in the Maldives covering every aspect of creativity, from wildlife photography and surfing to freediving. Despite the names, the workshops aren’t designed as a sequence; there’s no need to follow a specific order. Participants can choose whichever experience best fits their interests, goals, and where they are in their own journey.

This year, they’ll be hosting their first ever workshop at Alaia Bay, the renowned wave pool in Switzerland. Thanks to their lifelong water experience, plus help from brand sponsors, they’re able to fully kit out students with top-of-the-line gear from Sony, Aquatech, Dafin Europe, and Deeply. How the Postigo Brothers Got Into Water Photography

“It all started when Alex studied graphic design. That’s where he discovered photography, and the connection was immediate. It was only a matter of time before photography ended up in the water. He had finally found a tool that allowed him to express and share everything the ocean had been showing him all those years. From that moment on, it was like a chain reaction of dominoes falling. At first, we were his models, experimenting with water shapes and movements to understand its language.”

Then the twins moved to the US, where they began experimenting with cameras on their own, and later went on to study audiovisual production in Spain, which made it very clear that this was the path they wanted to follow. Meanwhile, Alex was already photographing professional surfing, traveling, and building a portfolio to carve out a place for himself in the world of water photography.

“Finally, in 2023, the three of us came together to create what we felt was the perfect team: Twin Media House (TMH) by The Postigo Brothers.”

Where the Workshops Came From — and What Makes Them Different

“It all started one summer while we were out sailing. People had always been asking us technical questions about our work, and we realized that the answers felt obvious and logical to us, but not necessarily to everyone else. That’s what sparked the idea of creating the workshops. That’s when TMH Academy was born.

From the very beginning, we discovered and learned the real value of these experiences. They’re not only educational; they’re also about building a community. Bringing together people who share the same love for photography, the ocean, and the desire to learn is a combination that never fails.

We also don’t focus solely on photography itself. We work on every aspect involved in being in the water — what we call our five fundamental pillars: photography, the body, the subject, the environment, and the mind.

One of the most interesting parts of having three brothers teaching is that we can create a very personal and intimate learning experience, especially during the practical sessions where we work with small groups. This allows us to give a lot of individual attention, solve as many questions as possible, and maintain a strong focus on safety in the water.

Another unique aspect is that participants don’t need to own any equipment. Thanks to our sponsors, we provide a complete setup — cameras, water housings, wetsuits, fins, and more — that participants can use throughout the workshops.

We are also constantly refining and improving the curriculum to make it as complete, valuable, and immersive as possible.”

If shots like these are what you dream of creating, look no further than the Postigo brothers.

What to Know Before Signing Up

“We always tell people not to come with expectations — just bring good energy and allow yourself to be surprised

Each day is carefully structured around the lessons and practical experiences we’ll be doing, from morning yoga sessions to activate the body, to theoretical classes on water photography, freediving, editing, and many other activities.

Skill level doesn’t really matter. We try to cover all aspects, and as we mentioned before, that’s one of the advantages of being three instructors. From the very first contact with participants, we aim to maintain open communication to answer questions and help them feel prepared before arriving at the workshops.”

What are you waiting for?
