Barbados’ top professional surfer and the Caribbean’s highest-ranked competitor, Josh Burke, has released his latest film, REAL ESTATE. It’s been racking up views and applause and it’s not hard to see why. Edited by his younger brother, Jacob, who’s no stranger to the top of a podium or the depths of Bajan barrel, this is one you don’t want to miss.

Having met the Burkes years ago on Barbados, I got to watch first-hand as they put on a masterclass at Soup Bowl. Whether it’s onshore and crumbly (typical) or offshore and insanely mesmerizing (as we see in the film), the boys have put in their time and it shows. Josh works the wave like he’s been doing it his whole life, in other words, he makes it look easy. Rest assured, it’s not. Keep an eye on the end section — it’s a man-eater.

The lifestyle and perspective granted from life on the Caribbean isle make him a unique surfer. Humble, yet confident. Refined, yet explosive. Of his peers, his surfing strikes me as a cross between Ethan Ewing‘s polished rail work and flawless power surfing, and Al Cleland’s stocky and solid frame that exudes raw nonchalance when charging in heavy surf.

“This film represents years of travel, hard work, and unforgettable experiences,” said Josh Burke. “In addition to the film title meaning, I wanted potential sponsors to know there is an available spot on my most valuable source of marketing exposure — my surfboards. I wanted REAL ESTATE to reflect not just the waves I’ve surfed, but the places, people, and moments that have shaped my career.”

Jacob did a brilliant job of weaving footage from multiple continents alongside elements that are distinctly Bajan and, as it should, Josh’s rides at Soup Bowl steal the show. The turquoise water. The perfect shape. The wild rides. It’ll have you dreaming of being in the slot, just like him.

“Working on REAL ESTATE was about creating something that felt genuine to Josh’s story,” said Jacob Burke. “We wanted the film to be more than a surf edit. It’s a reflection of the lifestyle, the sacrifices, the adventures, and the passion that drive professional surfing.”

The film marks another big step for Burke’s, they keep the bar high. All the while raising up the status of Barbados as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. Together, they blaze an epic trail that serves as inspiration for the next generation of Caribbean surfers aspiring to compete on the world stage.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
