Firewire Surfboards is proud to announce the launch of Proflex Technology, the brand’s most advanced high-performance surfboard construction to date, debuting with the Proflex Spaceship, designed by Kelly Slater and Mike Woo. Proflex is built around one goal: delivering powerful, controlled flex with unmatched durability – without sacrificing feel. First unveiled, alongside the Spaceship I-Bolic, as R&D protos in March 2024 during Slater’s memorable sessions at Kirra, the Spaceship Proflex is a high-performance model for good waves featuring a more conventional outline designed for holding in tubes, turns on rail, and carving on the open face.

At the heart of Proflex is a lightweight EPS core reinforced by an engineered carbon cage that controls flex and rebound where it matters most. A proprietary deck skin and resilient S-glass deck add strength underfoot, while carbon reinforcement along the bottom and rails increases durability without making the board feel stiff or dead. This balanced construction creates smooth energy transfer through turns, faster rebound, and a lively feel straight off the rack – unlike full carbon boards that often need time to break in. Proflex delivers performance immediately and maintains it longer.

Proflex builds on Firewire’s flex-first design philosophy and joins the brand’s existing construction technologies. These include I-Bolic, with an EPS foam core, internal I-beam, and high-density foam rails for controlled flex and drive; Helium, a lightweight EPS core with parabolic wood rails and composite skins for generating speed and lively response; and Volcanic, which replaces traditional fiberglass with basalt fiber extruded from volcanic rock for durability and pop. With Proflex, Firewire continues to push surfboard construction forward using advanced materials to enhance performance, feel, and longevity.

Kelly Slater, Co-Designer, Slater Designs Spaceship; 11-Time World Surfing Champion: “This board was designed and ridden in a lot of good-quality waves,” said Kelly Slater. “When you pick it up, it feels pretty thin and knifey in the rails, which is good for a better wave. At the same time, it has a little extra foam through the center from the rolled convex deck. By using that rolled deck, we were able to add about a liter or more of foam and flotation into the board. You almost don’t even need an arch bar in your deck pad, because it’s already naturally rolled back there.”

Brett Savage, GM Surfboards and Hardgoods, Firewire Surfboards: “This board is very unique and that was clear the first time we saw Kelly on it at Kirra,” said Brett Savage. “The combination of carbon reinforcement and the T10/S-glass deck system showed in his turns – and unlike full-carbon-wrapped constructions, which often require a break-in period, this build feels lively and responsive straight off the rack.”
