There have been some heavy moments at The Wedge this summer, but the beach erosion and destruction caused by the relentless hurricane swells may be the heaviest of all. The crew at Yucca Fins have been on it, providing regular updates and info, and now they’re teaming up with the Surfrider Foundation for a beach cleanup.
Taking place on Saturday, September 19, from 8:00am to 12:00pm, the timing couldn’t be better. Organizers are already expecting nearly 250 volunteers to show up, but that number could increase considerably depending on how many people you can cram in your rig. Most recently, Hurricane Marie hammered the Southern California coast, carving away huge amounts of sand along the Orange County coast, leaving behind steep beach faces and exposing material that had been buried for decades. At The Wedge, erosion has revealed rocks, pipes, wires, chunks of concrete, and remnants of old infrastructure.
For anyone who has been following Yucca Fins on Instagram, the changes have been hard to miss. The local brand has been regularly documenting the evolving conditions at The Wedge, providing a running visual record of how quickly the beach has changed as successive swells have moved sand around the peninsula.
Now, instead of simply watching the transformation, the local surf community is getting to work. The cleanup is expected to turn up more than the usual collection of beach litter. With so much sand stripped away by recent swells, volunteers could encounter debris and remnants of the Wedge’s buried past that normally remain hidden beneath the beach. It could be, dare we say, historic!
Adding to the community vibe, Hola Adios Coffee will be on site serving free coffee to volunteers. Everyone who participates will also receive a 20-percent-off Yucca Fins coupon for use in the shop. And for those students or parolees, volunteer service hours will also be available for attendees.
The Wedge has spent the summer reminding Southern California just how powerful the ocean can be. On September 19, Yucca Fins, Surfrider and hundreds of volunteers will have a chance to give something back. And considering what Marie uncovered, there’s no telling what they might find.
