Kelly Slater has spent more than three decades redefining what’s possible on a surfboard. These days, though, the 11x world champ is embracing a new path.
On social media, the 54-year-old surfing icon announced the birth of his daughter, Azumi Moon, sharing a series of intimate family photos with longtime partner Kalani Miller, toddler son Tao, and their newest addition. The images keep the baby’s face private, instead focusing on quiet moments together as a family.
“Finding balance with our new addition. 3 months of Azumi Moon being with her brother Tao,” Slater wrote. See photos of the baby announcement below.
The name Azumi has Japanese origins and is commonly interpreted to mean “safe residence,” “peaceful home,” or “abundant beauty,” depending on the characters used to write it. Paired with the middle name Moon, it’s a fittingly serene choice for a surfer whose life has long been shaped by the rhythms of the ocean.
Azumi joins a growing family. Slater and Miller welcomed their son, Tao, a few years ago, while Slater is also father to Taylor, his adult daughter from a previous relationship.
The announcement comes at a busy time for the GOAT.
In just over a week, Slater will return to elite-level competition as a wildcard at the Outerknown Tahiti Pro, held at the legendary reef break of Teahupo’o from August 8-18, 2026. As the founder of Outerknown, the event’s title sponsor, Slater was the obvious choice for the invitation.
Few surfers have enjoyed more success at Teahupo’o. Across his remarkable career, Slater claimed five victories at the heaving Tahitian lefthander, cementing his place as one of the wave’s greatest competitors.

Whether he adds another memorable chapter remains to be seen.
But judging by his latest post, Slater’s greatest victories aren’t measured only by trophies anymore. Between preparing for one of the world’s heaviest waves and raising three children, the surfing legend appears to have found a new definition of balance.
