The Pacific Ocean is wreaking havoc on a Northern California landmark.
Pacifica Municipal Pier—an icon that has stood against decades of storms, swell events, and pounding surf—has been closed indefinitely after city engineers discovered a growing crack in the structure’s concrete walkway. Officials say the damage is severe enough that parts of the pier are separating, raising concerns about its long-term future.
According to the City of Pacifica, inspectors observed “cracking, separation, and displacement of the concrete walkway and structural elements near the Pier abutment.” Officials immediately shut down public access, stating that the pier “will remain closed until it can be determined that the facility is safe for public use.”
Photos released by the city show a dramatic fracture running across the structure near shore. Local reports indicate the crack has continued to widen, with visible separation developing between portions of the pier and the surrounding concrete.
The culprit appears to be the same force that has shaped—and battered—the California coastline for millennia: waves.

The 1,100-foot-long pier sits directly exposed to the open Pacific, where winter storms and long-period swells routinely unleash tremendous energy. Pacifica’s shoreline is no stranger to powerful surf, and recent wave activity is believed to have contributed to the latest structural failure.
The damage has already claimed one casualty. Chit Chat Cafe, the beloved waterfront eatery perched atop the pier, announced that it has been forced to close and may ultimately face demolition. Owners told customers they were evacuated immediately after the crack was discovered and are uncertain whether the building can be saved.
The timing couldn’t be worse.
A fresh pulse of South Pacific energy is expected to impact portions of the West Coast later this week, adding more wave energy to an already stressed shoreline. While the swell is expected to produce excellent surf at many California breaks, residents in Pacifica will be watching for a different reason.
After surviving more than 50 years on the edge of the continent, the future of Pacifica Pier now hangs in the balance—and the ocean isn’t done knocking on the door.
