Earlier this summer, after heroically rescuing a 10-year-old boy in serious trouble of going under in heavy shorebreak conditions, 16-year-old Santa Cruz lifeguard Ryder Williams have found himself thrust into the media spotlight.
On Monday, the spotlight got even brighter when Williams was welcomed into the Oval Office by President Donald Trump alongside 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai, the boy he rescued from powerful surf at Santa Cruz’s Seabright State Beach on July 25. The dramatic rescue was captured on video, went viral and ultimately caught the president’s attention.
“What you did was incredible, and everybody saw it. And you’d watch it over and over. I know when I first saw it I said, ‘Roll that back, I want to see that again. Is that really happening?’” Trump shared from the Oval Office.
A Rescue in Powerful Surf
The footage shows Williams battling through heavy, tropical swell-fueled surf to reach Rai after the boy was swept off his feet. Williams was eventually able to secure the child, holding onto him as waves repeatedly crashed over both of them. Fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen later joined the rescue, helping bring the pair back to shore.
Monday’s Oval Office meeting gave Williams and Rai an opportunity to meet face-to-face again under considerably calmer conditions. Trump praised Williams during the meeting, calling him a “real hero” and marveling at the teenager’s willingness to enter the dangerous surf. Rai sat alongside his father, Sumit, while Williams was joined by members of his family and Bohnen.

A Dangerous Day at Seabright
Waves at Seabright reportedly reached around 10 feet during the swell event, with powerful currents and shorebreak creating hazardous conditions along the coast. Williams later said the boy became limp in his arms, making the rescue even more difficult. The incident was part of an exceptionally busy day for Santa Cruz lifeguards. According to reports, Williams and his fellow lifeguards carried out dozens of rescues as powerful surf impacted the coastline.

Williams Keeps the Focus on the Job
Remarkably, Williams has consistently downplayed the attention surrounding the rescue.
“This is my job and I love what I do,” he said after the rescue, crediting his fellow lifeguards and emphasizing that rescues are part of the job.
That humility has become part of the story. While the viral video turned Williams into a national headline, the teenager’s actions represent something familiar to anyone who spends time around serious surf: when conditions turn dangerous, preparation, experience and the willingness to act can make all the difference.
