After months of construction and years of planning, the Cabo Real development in Cabo San Lucas turned on the water and began filling its new wave basin this week. It will reportedly take about 30 to 40 days to fill up the basin completely. Covering four acres, it requires about seven million gallons of water to fill to capacity. The water is coming from a desalination plant that Cabo Real built specifically for the project.
Once the filling process is done, it will be time for the team at Endless Surf to do their thing and start programming the wave-making technology, which will be powered by their ES48 pneumatic wave-generation system. The team at Cabo Real is hopeful that folks will be surfing Mexico’s first wave pool by the start of December.
To celebrate all their progress, last night Cabo Real hosted a happy hour at Lost Molinos Brewery in San Clemente. Dotted with surf stars in town for the WSL’s Trestles Pro, Brad Gerlach, Matt Biolos, and the McPhillips family all swung by, but the guest of honor was teen phenom Erin Brooks. Coming off back-to-back wins in Fiji and Tahiti, she was one of the first surfers to secure a plot in the Cabo Real development. Literally steps from the wave basin, you think the 19-year-old spitfire is gnarly now, wait until she gets her own private training facility.
Meriwether Companies is the organization behind Cabo Real, as well as the Coral Mountain project in the Coachella Valley, which will also be powered by Endless Surf tech. Investor and surfer Michael Schwab is also playing an integral part in both developments. Recently married, his wedding was attended by an all-star list of surfers, including Nathan Fletcher (who’s serving as the head judge for the new Natural Selection Surf event, which premieres on September 25), Shane Dorian, Tia Blanco, and G Love, but most notable of all was Motown icon Diana Ross, who provided the musical entertainment.
Meriwether’s going all in on the wave pool arms race, and about the same time the water was being turned on in Cabo, the California team was officially breaking ground in La Quinta. It’ll be a while before the water starts flowing there, but if Cabo Real is anything to go by, it’s going to get done sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for a broader update coming next month.
