Key Points
- Dylan Graves and Blair Conklin surf a previously unridden wave in Hokkaido, Japan.
- The unique jetty creates chaotic, imperfect waves perfect for novelty surfing.
- “We pulled it. The acid drop to wave ride. That’s what we were dreaming of.”
In today’s day and age, with geotags and social media interconnectivity and so on, it’s a rare spot to be never-before-seen – let alone never-before-surfed.
But leave it to Dylan Graves and Blair Conklin – two of the world’s most prominent novelty wave hunters – to find a spot in Japan that, apparently, “no one has surfed this wave…until now.”
It’s a wonky jetty, allowing for airdrops, then a refractory wedge wave, which creates further chaos. In other words, it’s far from perfect. But that’s the whole point of novelty wave surfing – you sniff out those imperfections, and embrace them. Watch below.
Filmer Ryunosuke Tomizawa captured the session, which went down somewhere in the Hokkaido region. And per his caption:
“A strange wave in Hokkaido, Japan… and maybe the first time it’s ever been ridden. I linked up with Blair Conklin and Dylan Graves to explore one of the weirdest waves we have ever seen. What started as curiosity turned into an unforgettable session in northern Japan. Cold water, a hidden spot, and a wave that makes no sense. Could this be the first surf ever here?”
Graves and Conklin attempt many acid drops into the wave, imploding upon impact most of the time. However, they do stick one or two.
As Conklin says at the end of the video:
“We pulled it. The acid drop to wave ride. That’s what we were dreaming of when we came here. It was a weird one.”
The Laguna Beach skimboard champion, and surf wizard, added on Instagram:
“Saw this wave on a story from @morganmaassen this past winter and have been wanting to give it a go ever since. I knew @dylangraves would also appreciate a weird set up like this. Turned out to be a really fun session and a pretty difficult thing to land. After many flops I finally managed to get one under my belt!”
