Pro surfer Dion Agius was at a snowboarding-themed art show in Switzerland, when he decided to go for some fun himself. Shortly after, he found himself in the hospital.
Agius was rushed to the emergency room after landing on his chest on the first day. He said in an Instagram post that he was hooked up to a machine for four days after suffering a collapsed lung.
“Got a bit too excited to be finally snowboarding again after four years and got smoked catching a rail first day in and somehow managed to land on the iciest patch on the mountain straight on my chest,” he said.
The Australian surfer was able to leave the hospital, but not until he racked up a $30,000 hospital bill.
“Maybe try not to go to hospital in Switzerland if you can avoid it, even though the treatment was 5 stars and (I ate) some tasty meals,” Agius said. “Seems as though my travel insurance doesn’t want to cover it.”
As an attempt to recoup some of his money, Agius will sell prints of some artwork he made during his short stay in Switzerland. Those who wish to purchase can send him a direct message on Instagram.
“Moral of the story is always double check your insurance and don’t be a kook and land on your chest on the ice,” he said. “Still so stoked got heal up enough to get out and to check out some amazing Switzerland scenery and be a little part of apart of the epic show with a great crew.”
The Instagram post was featured a photo of a shirtless Agius with a hospital gown tied around his waist and a strong middle finger held up the the camera.
Agius is a free surfer from Tasmania, Australia, who was dubbed “the 21st Century’s first truly modern surfer” by The Surfer’s Journal’s Jed Smith. He burst onto the surf scene in 2009, then transitioned to the world of art in more recent years.
He was in Switzerland for the TIDAL art show, an ongoing exhibition that showcases art through the world of snowboarding. The show was held at the Riders Hotel in Laax, and that gave Agius the opportunity to get on his snowboard for the first time in four years, he said.
