Tropical Storm Norbert formed in the Eastern Pacific Thursday morning, becoming the 16th named system in what has rapidly developed into a supercharged tropical season.
Moving westward with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, forecasters and oceanographers are keeping a watchful eye on the storm’s evolving trajectory as it churns across warm, fuel-rich waters southwest of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
According to official advisories from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and NOAA meteorologists, favorable environmental conditions will support steady intensification over the coming days, with forecast models indicating Norbert could strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend as it tracks deeper into the open Pacific basin.
“Gradual strengthening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Norbert is expected to become a hurricane by Saturday as it continues moving west over unusually warm ocean waters,” officials from the NHC and NOAA noted.
For Hawaii, news of another developing tropical system brings unwelcome anxiety. Island communities across Kauai and the western chain are still actively recovering and cleaning up from the severe mudslides, widespread flash flooding, and damaging winds left behind by Hurricane Lowell just days ago.

Although early long-range model runs suggest Norbert remains more than a week away from potentially making a close approach, weather officials stress that long-range track projections carry inherent uncertainty.
The relentless surge in tropical activity is a direct hallmark of the powerful Super El Niño event currently dominating the Pacific Ocean. By significantly warming sea-surface temperatures across the equatorial basin and suppressing vertical wind shear, El Niño has transformed the region into a hyperactive storm factory.
Climate scientists warn that these elevated water temperatures are projected to persist into 2027, setting the stage for a prolonged era of heightened tropical threats.
With state emergency management agencies in Hawaii remaining on high alert following Lowell’s impact, weather officials urge coastal residents to monitor Norbert’s path closely as this historic hurricane season continues its relentless pace.
