16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams has become one of the most recognizable faces of the summer after risking his own life to save a 10-year-old boy from pounding surf in Santa Cruz, California – a clip that has gone utterly viral.
Now, the teenage hero is finally speaking publicly.
“This is my job and I love what I do,” Williams said in a statement from California State Parks. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to return the child to his family safely. I’m thankful to my fellow lifeguards who perform rescues just like this every day.”
Williams’ dramatic rescue at Seabright State Beach went worldwide after, showing him battling relentless 8-to-10-foot waves while refusing to let go of the struggling boy. The rescue, which unfolded during a powerful hurricane swell, earned national attention.
Even President Donald Trump saw the clip, who said he wants to honor Williams at the White House with a high civilian award.
The rescued boy’s father, Sumit Rai, has also broken his silence.
“Ryder’s only 16 years old himself… for him to take that kind of leadership and have that type of courage and bravery to go out and save someone else’s life is remarkable,” Rai said. “We got lucky that he didn’t die… I’m incredibly and extraordinarily grateful to the lifeguard. He’s the only reason that my son is alive.”

Williams has consistently shifted the attention away from himself and toward his fellow guards.
His humility only adds to the honor of this young man. Over that same weekend, California State Parks lifeguards completed 34 rescues along the Santa Cruz coastline as powerful surf generated by Hurricanes Fausto and Genevieve, combined with an active El Niño pattern, created hazardous conditions up and down the coast.
For surfers, those scenes have been a welcome gift this summer.
Back-to-back swells have delivered incredible waves—but they’ve also produced dangerous rip currents, heavy shorebreak, and countless emergencies.
Lifeguards rarely make headlines. Most rescues happen without cameras rolling.
Williams’ viral moment served as a powerful reminder that while surfers often celebrate the waves, there is another group standing watch every day, ready to paddle into the worst of them when someone else can’t make it back to shore.
Lifeguards like Ryder Williams are true unsung heroes. Huge respect to those who put their lives on the line for others, saving people from the ocean every single day, and the endless heroics that happen when no cameras are on the beach. Absolute legends.
