As Typhoon Dujuan barrels toward eastern Japan, the massive storm is unleashing immense, violent surf along the country’s Pacific coastline.
The large, powerful cyclone—designated as Typhoon No. 25 of 2026—has generated maximum sustained winds of 126 km/h and terrifying gusts up to 180 km/h, transforming the ocean into a churning, perilous spectacle.

In the viral clip, an absolute “monster” wave is seen exploding just behind a traditional Japanese torii gate, sending a massive cloud of whitewash high into the air. The juxtaposition of the serene spiritual structure standing resilient against the violent, towering surf is both beautiful and terrifying.
While the dramatic waves are a mesmerizing sight, the conditions are incredibly dangerous. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued strict warnings for the Kanto region, including Tokyo, urging extreme caution against the high waves, torrential rain, and gale-force winds.
JMA forecaster Yoshikazu Yano warned that the typhoon’s impacts will extend far beyond the beach, potentially causing severe flooding in low-lying areas, landslides, and major public transport disruptions during Japan’s five-day holiday period.
“People who are planning leisure activities or returning to their hometowns during the holiday period should respond flexibly, including by changing their plans,” Yano advised.
Oceanographers and marine experts note that massive typhoons like Dujuan displace enormous amounts of water, sending deep-ocean swells pulsing toward the coast long before the storm makes direct landfall. As these powerful swells hit the shallow reefs and structures along Japan’s shoreline, they unload their stored energy in the form of towering, destructive waves.
As Typhoon Dujuan continues its northward track toward the Boso Peninsula, authorities urge everyone to safely stay away from the shoreline. For now, observing these monstrous waves through viral videos is the safest way to appreciate the raw power of the ocean.
