If you’re stormchasing on the East Coast, you should get yourself to West Virginia as soon as possible, because it’s having the best snowboarding season in over a decade.
Snowshoe Mountain has gotten over 41” of snow in the last week, the resort revealed in an Instagram post. That cheat mountain magic has the Snowshoe microclimate delivering snow day after snow day. The total snowfall of the season so far has already surpassed 100”.
“These are some of the best snow conditions we’ve seen in the last decade,” Snowshoe spokesperson Shawn Cassell said to Matt Laws of SkiSoutheast. “Our operations team has taken full advantage of this cooperative weather, and we’ve been opening more trails every day this week. We expect to have 45+ trails open by this weekend, and if this cold stretch contines, we’ll be fully open very soon. Now is the time to make your plans to get up here while the getting is good.”
Most of the state is set to get even more snow before the weekend hits. The areas of higher elevation could get another 2 to 5” of snow, and the region is under a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service. There is extreme cold coming too, which will bring temperatures down toward 0 degrees in the next few days. If you’re headed to the valley, dress in layers.
On a personal note, the influx of snow is great news. Three of my last five days of the 2023-2024 season were at Snowshoe. I was surprised with a powder day during my stay, which was much needed at the end of the season, as many of the slopes looked like they were fighting hard to transition into mountain biking season. The powder didn’t have much of a base to fall upon, however, and my board fell victim to a snow snake on the final day of my trip. The Silver Creek side of the mountain was closed by the time I got there, and instead of riding it, I hiked up it with my dog.
