There are rough crossings, and then there’s the Drake Passage.

A harrowing video filmed aboard a cruise ship shows exactly why the stretch of ocean between South America and Antarctica has such a fearsome reputation. Through the ship’s massive observation windows, passengers watch towering walls of dark water rear up toward the vessel. The ship pitches violently, seemingly tossed around like a kid’s toy in a bathtub as wave after wave detonates against the glass.

There’s no verified wave-height measurement attached to the clip, but using the ship itself for scale, the largest seas appear to be roughly 25 to 35 feet — potentially higher.

And that’s entirely plausible in the Drake, where waves exceeding 65 feet have been reported. One explorer described the passage’s steep, closely spaced waves succinctly: “They hit you like walls.”

The Drake Passage spans roughly 600 miles between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula. Its brutality comes largely from geography — or the lack of it.

The Southern Ocean circles Antarctica virtually unobstructed by land, allowing powerful winds and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current to race around the planet while storms build enormous seas.

Sailors have a nickname for the rough version: the “Drake Shake.” When it miraculously goes calm, it’s the “Drake Lake.”

And the danger extends well beyond seasickness.

In November 2022, the expedition ship Viking Polaris was crossing the Drake near Cape Horn when a breaking wave smashed seven cabin windows.

One passenger was killed and eight others were injured. Investigators later determined that the wave struck high enough — and with enough force — to shatter the windows, noting that wind conditions capable of producing breaking waves are common in the region.

That tragedy puts the latest footage into perspective.

Modern expedition ships are engineered for brutal conditions. But when the Drake wakes up, even a vessel weighing thousands of tons can suddenly look very small.

And through those observation windows, the next wave looks less like water and more like an aquatic mountain. Ladies and gentlemen, brace for impact.
