Lucas Magoon doesn’t have many firsts left in his snowboarding career. But on February 22, he’ll add one to his résumé: Red Bull Heavy Metal contestant.

There will be 36 total competitors dropping in at Boston’s City Hall Plaza. Magoon will be one of nine first-timers to the competition.

The contest will also feature five returning winners: Vermont’s Maggie Leon, Pat Fava, Benny Milam, Austin Visintainer, and Veda Hallen. Hallen and Visintainer won Red Bull Heavy Metal St. Paul at the beginning of February.

Zeb Powell led the charge to bring the contest to Boston. He was inspired by previous Red Bull Heavy Metal events and wanted to bring the sport to the city that he has grown to love and call home. Boston’s City Hall Plaza recent renovation creates a “too good not to ride” atmosphere for these snowboarders, a press release states.

“Sharing the joy of snowboarding with the heart of the Northeast brings so much energy to the sport,” Powell said in a press release. “A lot of amazing snowboarders come from around Boston and not everyone knows that. This event exposes more people to the sport who would otherwise never know about it.”

New Hampshire’s Loon Mountain will provide 300 tons of snow to make sure that the conditions are ideal for riders. The contest will feature three different competition zones, and each will highlight a different aspect of street riding. A winner from each zone — both male and female — will be crowned, and an overall winner will take home $4,500 and a CNCPTS x BURTON “Rabbit Hole” collection snowboard.

“As a city, we are all about creating exciting and energetic experiences for our residents,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a press release. “Bringing together diverse communities in the heart of the city is truly something special. City Hall Plaza is the people’s plaza and I look forward to seeing it continue to thrive and serve our residents.”
