Once again, Australians are rallying around a shark attack victim. This time, a young mother and teacher was bitten by a great white, leaving her fighting for her life.

Leah Stewart, 35, lost her arm after being mauled by a great white shark while swimming at Coogee Beach, near Sydney and the iconic Bondi Beach. According to Australian media reports, Stewart suffered catastrophic injuries during the attack and remains on life support as doctors continue to monitor her condition.

The incident shocked beachgoers and sent ripples throughout Australia’s surfing and ocean-going communities, even reigniting calls for a shark cull.

In the days since the attack, support for Stewart has been overwhelming. A GoFundMe campaign created to assist with medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and support for her young family has raised more than $300,000, with donations continuing to pour in from around the world. The fundraiser describes Stewart as a devoted mother, beloved teacher, and passionate ocean lover whose life changed in an instant.

The crowdfunding effort reads: “Leah is a dedicated and loving mother, a passionate teacher, and a Coogee local who loves the ocean. Tragically, on June 13th, whilst on a morning swim close to the shore, within the flags on Coogee Beach, Leah was attacked by a shark and has sustained severe and life-threatening injuries with multiple bites across her arms and legs, lacerations and fractures throughout her body, and extreme blood loss.”

Charlie Verco, a volunteer lifeguard, is being hailed as a hero for helping Stewart following the attack. “She was in quite a bit of shock,” Verco said after helping her to shore amidst the mauling. “She ended up losing consciousness. I just kept her head out of the water.”

The attack comes amid a troubling year for shark incidents in Australia. Just months ago, the Sydney region experienced a series of four shark attacks within a 48-hour period, involving bull sharks. The incidents left one child dead and another victim, a surfer, without a leg. Those attacks reignited public debate about shark safety, beach protections, and the increasing number of encounters occurring near populated coastlines.

While shark attacks remain statistically rare, stories like Stewart’s are a sobering reminder that the ocean always carries an element of risk, even in familiar waters.

For now, the focus remains on Stewart’s recovery. Friends, family, and strangers alike continue to share messages of support while contributing to a fundraiser that has become a powerful reflection of the compassion that often emerges in the wake of tragedy.

As donations climb and hope remains, an entire community is pulling for her.
