Quiksilver Festival Turns Up The Heat On French Nightlife (Photos)

The waves have been pumping in Hossegor during the early days of the Quiksilver Pro, but that’s not really the story here. Of course the surf’s been firing. September in the south of France is magic. But what really brings the annual gathering together is what goes down when the sun sets.

A celebration of unbridled surf culture today, the good times were rolling for the European premiere of Mikey February and Spearhead Unlimited’s new film, “Sun Song.” Produced in partnership with the wonderful folks at SunBum, the film was shot in Fiji and is billed as “a mixed-media exploration of the cultural impact of surfing through film, music and art.” In other words, a perfect fit for the Quiksilver Festival.

Showcasing what’s possible at Cloudbreak when style and power collide, Mr. February is joined by Frankie Harrer, Kobe Hughes, James Kusitino, Lungi Slabb, and Tosh Tudor. A creative tour de force, it’s a world away from what we just saw when the Championship Tour just swung through the South Pacific, but equally as entertaining. Of course, February rules, Slabb and Tudor delight, but 17-year-old Kusitino continues to put the world on notice that Fiji’s star is on the rise.

A full evening of entertaining, the party got started with a behind-the-scenes look at the forthcoming Natural Selection Surf event (which drops on September 25) and a question-and-answer session with high flyers Mikey Wright, Hughie Vaughan, and Nathan Fletcher.

Because the party doesn’t start until late in France, after the film, it was time to turn up the volume. Musical acts Midnight Shake and The Small Fortunes took the stage much to the revelry of the crowd, who by this time had spent the day at the beach, caught a surf flick, and continued to rage all night long.

For a brand that once used the tagline, “If you can’t rock and roll don’t f—ing come,” in their ads, the Quiksilver Festival has been absolutely on point so far. The event runs through September 27 (if anyone can stay up that long). Keep it locked here for more updates.
