Four sailors are lucky to be alive today after a terrifying encounter in the remote South Pacific, where a sperm whale cracked the hull of their yacht, ultimately sinking the vessel and forcing a harrowing fight for survival on the high seas.

The dramatic incident occurred roughly 250 nautical miles north of Norfolk Island when the massive marine mammal suddenly struck the boat.

According to the sailors, the violent impact was completely unexpected and immediately life-threatening. Video showed the boat barely above water:

“There was sort of a loud thud. The whole boat was pushed sideways,” recounted crew member Jemma Cooper, who was thrown from the steering wheel.

Initially confused by the terrifying crash, she soon spotted the culprits in the water.

“We looked out to our port side, and there were six to eight, a pod of whales there,” she explained.

Her husband, Jeremy Cooper, was sleeping below deck when the collision jolted him awake. He quickly realized the yacht was in grave danger.

“It was pretty immediately evident it was very serious,” Jeremy explained. “All the steering gear was smashed on the starboard side, and there was a significant amount of water coming in.”

As observed in the terrifying video footage, the catastrophic impact broke the boat’s steering mechanism.

About 30 minutes after the devastating strike, the desperate crew activated an emergency beacon.

“We declared a full mayday,” said New Zealand crew member Terry Hetherington.

The four sailors spent hours frantically bailing out seawater before the relentless flooding finally forced the crew to abandon ship and transfer into a small life raft.

Following a massive, multi-agency coordination effort, a passing container ship finally reached the stranded crew 18 hours after the whale encounter.

Reflecting on the terrifying ordeal and their miraculous rescue on the open ocean, Jeremy Cooper captured the crew’s immense relief:

“It was wonderful, wonderful, and just a terrible, terrible ending — but luckily no loss of life.”
