A red flag usually means one thing at the beach: stay out of the water. But during Storm Austen in England, a warning sparked something else entirely—a fistfight.

Footage circulating online shows an altercation at Polzeath Beach on Friday, October 23, after a family with two young children ventured into dangerous surf carrying bodyboards.

According to CornwallLive, the parents and children were wearing wetsuits when a man approached them near the shoreline shortly before 2 p.m., apparently concerned about the conditions. Instead of backing away from the sea, the father reportedly ran toward the passerby, raised his fists, and struck him. See footage of the altercation below.

According to eyewitnesses who watched the incident unfold from a nearby café, the family’s decision to enter the churning water seemed suicidal.

“We were sat having a coffee and watched the family with very young-looking kids heading down to the water’s edge, battling with their boogie boards,” a witness said. “We thought they must be crazy going in as the swell and sea state was so rough, not to mention the 50 mph winds! After a couple of minutes of being in the water, a passerby walked to the water’s edge and we assumed they were suggesting it wasn’t safe.”

The witness said the father “proceeded to punch him in the face.” Some of the confrontation was captured on video and shared on Instagram. The passerby reportedly walked away without retaliating.

A few minutes later, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards reportedly approached and asked the family to leave.

The weather was no joke.

Storm Austen, the United Kingdom’s first named storm of the season, had prompted an amber wind warning across Cornwall. The Met Office recorded gusts of 71 mph at Culdrose, while the Isles of Scilly registered 76 mph.

Ahead of the storm, RNLI water safety manager Ross Macleod cautioned that dangerous seas could “knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea.”

And a red beach flag isn’t an invitation to test your bodyboarding skills. It means conditions are too dangerous to enter the water, regardless of whether someone thinks the waves look manageable.

The unusual confrontation unfolded as Storm Austen brought powerful winds and heavy rain to southwest England, causing widespread disruption well beyond the beaches.

No injuries or police action stemming from the altercation were confirmed in the reporting.

What started as an apparent attempt to keep a family safe became another startling scene from an already chaotic day on Britain’s storm-battered coast.
