California’s lifeguards have barely had a moment to catch their breath this summer.
The latest reminder came at La Jolla’s rugged coastline, where dramatic video captured a San Diego lifeguard – only identified as “Naomi” – battling pounding surf to rescue a man stranded against the rocks as El Niño-fueled hurricane swell hammered the shoreline.
The footage shows heavy sets detonating across the rocky point as the victim struggles to escape the impact zone. Timing the lull between waves, the lifeguard reaches the man before guiding him through the turbulent whitewater and away from the unforgiving cliffs.
According to the video’s caption, the man had become trapped in dangerous conditions created by the large surf, leaving rescue personnel to navigate one of Southern California’s most hazardous stretches of coastline. The caption praised the lifeguards’ quick response, noting that without their intervention, the outcome could have been far worse.
The rescue comes during one of the busiest summers San Diego’s lifeguards have seen in years.
According to FOX 5 San Diego, lifeguards have performed a mind-boggling 3,896 rescues since June 1, a serious increase driven by repeated hurricane swells, elevated surf, powerful rip currents, and crowded beaches.

Officials told the station that the combination of warm weather and relentless surf has kept crews constantly responding to emergencies, urging beachgoers to swim near staffed towers and pay close attention to ocean conditions.
It’s a story playing out all along California’s coastline.
Just recently, 16-year-old Santa Cruz lifeguard Ryder Williams became a national hero after rescuing a 10-year-old boy from pounding surf. Video of the rescue spread across the internet, even prompting an invitation to the White House from President Donald Trump.
Most rescues, however, don’t go viral.
They happen quietly, often with little fanfare, as lifeguards sprint into dangerous surf while everyone else is running away from it.
And this relentless summer has served as a timely reminder that lifeguards remain some of the most underappreciated heroes in the surf world. To them, pulling a stranded swimmer from a thumping impact zone isn’t about glory—it’s just part of the job.
