Three-time World Surf League champion John John Florence is continuing his epic, globe-trotting ocean odyssey aboard his high-performance catamaran, Vela.
Joined by his wife Lauryn and their young son Darwin, the Hawaiian powerhouse has spent more than a year navigating the open seas. After extensively exploring the remote lineups of the South Pacific and the rugged coastlines of New Zealand, the Florence family recently ventured into entirely new Atlantic territory—specifically the stunning, turquoise channels of the Lucayan Archipelago in the Bahamas.

In the newest view inside life on the Vela, the crew affectionately dubs the idyllic Caribbean region “the other side of the world.”
The Bahamas are rarely considered a major blip on the global high-performance surfing map, typically overshadowed by heavy-water meccas of the Pacific like Pipeline, Cloudbreak, or Teahupo’o. Yet, in signature John John fashion, the natural-footed maestro managed to track down remarkably fun, crystal-clear, tropical offshore waves breaking over secluded island reefs with a healthy surf scene thriving in the Bahamas.
The vlog showcases an enviable blend of world-class free surfing, free diving, spear fishing, and the quiet, simple joys of living off-grid with a toddler aboard a sailboat. Navigating pristine, wind-swept passages, the journey emphasizes deep ocean connection, curiosity, and family life on the open water. The episode concludes with a heartwarming and reflective quote:
“We came to the Bahamas not knowing what to expect, and left inspired. Keep surfing.”
It remains entirely uncertain when—or even if—Florence will return to full-time Championship Tour competition. Having already secured three world titles and firmly established his legacy as one of the greatest all-around watermen ever, the grueling jersey-wearing grind offers little comparison to the pure freedom of sailing the globe.
For the time being, John John seems completely content steering Vela toward uncharted horizons, prioritizing quality family time, and exploring the world’s coastlines one wave at a time. It’s tough to blame him, too; don’t we all dream of such adventures?
