Nicolas Cage has endured plenty of bizarre plot twists on screen, but his latest real-life predicament is straight out of a disaster movie. The charmingly unhinged Hollywood icon has found himself in an actual catastrophe, courtesy of the Pacific Ocean.
He’s apparently “homeless,” the actor revealed. The situation stemming from complications and coastal erosion from the relentless “Super” El Niño season.
During a panel at Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31, Cage disclosed that he’s still unable to live in his $10.5 million Malibu mansion after a massive sinkhole swallowed his driveway nearly two months ago.
“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” Cage told the audience during the panel. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”
As SURFER previously reported, the nightmare began September 8, when Hurricane Marie’s powerful south swell, combined with unusually high tides and coastal erosion, ripped open an enormous crater along Sea Level Drive.
The sinkhole eventually measured approximately 30 feet by 60 feet and plunged 25 feet deep. It destroyed Cage’s driveway, damaged his property, and ruptured a gas line.

“The ocean didn’t exactly knock on Nicolas Cage’s door. It took out the driveway,” SURFER reported at the time.
Malibu officials declared a local emergency, ordering evacuations affecting 31 properties. Seven homes were initially red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while others lost safe vehicle access.
The disaster arrived amid unusually elevated Southern California sea levels associated with El Niño conditions, compounding the damage from Marie’s hurricane-generated waves.
Cage, 62, purchased the roughly 4,000-square-foot beachfront property in 2024. He’s since obtained permits for repairs, but there’s no confirmed timeline for his return.
There’s also a strange coincidence in all this.
Cage recently starred in The Surfer, a psychedelic psychological thriller about a man returning to his childhood beach in Australia, only to be tormented by aggressive locals until he begins unraveling.
Now, the actor has his own oceanfront nightmare to contend with.
And with the “Super” El Niño winter approaching, Malibu’s battered coastline faces an unsettling question: How much longer can these multimillion-dollar mansions withstand the relentless Pacific? And will Cage remain “homeless”?
Stay tuned.
