The iconic Scripps Pier in La Jolla set the stage for an inspiring convergence of surf royalty, scientific innovation, and community solidarity at the 33rd annual Legends of Surfing Invitational. Ocean enthusiasts of all types and legendary figures from across the surfing realm gathered on the beach to not only celebrate surf culture, but also rally behind a critical cause: raising vital funds and awareness for cancer research at the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.

Filmmaker Taylor Steele came out, along with a slew of surf legends like Tom Curren, Peter Towned, Pat O’Connell, Matt Archbold, and many more. Beyond the stacked heats, the event further honored Gerry Lopez as the inaugural recipient of the Legends of Surfing Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering style and decades of influence on global surf culture.

The event took on an extraordinary nostalgic charge with a special reunion of a handful of the stars from the 1987 cult surf film North Shore. Cast members Matt Adler, John Philbin, Gregory Harrison, and of course, Gerry Lopez gathered on the sand and in the lineup, stoking out fans and rekindling that timeless spirit of the classic movie.

Further highlighting the artistic heritage of our beloved sport, La Jolla fine artist and surfboard shaper Tim Bessell served as the official event artist, unveiling a gorgeous custom board dedicated to his mother and lost friends impacted by the disease. The board was auctioned off for an impressive $11,000.

For many participants, including cancer survivors and those surfing in memory of loved ones, the friendly competition served as a powerful reminder of community resilience. The impact of their efforts was made tangible as researchers from Moores Cancer Center shared encouraging news on groundbreaking drug therapies targeting pancreatic cancer mutations—advancements fueled directly by community fundraising.

By blending classic surf nostalgia with life-saving science, the Invitational proved that the deep-rooted bonds of the surfing community continue to be a formidable force in the ongoing fight against cancer.
