Balatonfured, Hungary Captures 2021 ICF SUP World Championships

The success of the 2019 ICF SUP World Championships in China attracted more than 200 paddle athletes from over 40 countries to race in the disciplines of SUP sprinting, technical and distance courses. This year, the ICF is looking forward to an even bigger field of athletes at their new venue,  Balatonfured, Hungary.

The overwhelming feedback we received after China was a sense of appreciation for the professionalism and respect shown towards the athletes and officials,” ICF president Jose Perurena said.

Our focus is on doing what is best for the sport of stand up paddling, and we are confident the 2021 SUP World Championships in Balatonfured will be very special.

“Hungary is considered one of the canoeing powerhouses of the world. The Hungarian Canoe Federation regularly hosts major international competitions, and it is that experience which they will bring forward to the 2021 SUP World Championships as well.”

This year’s event will also include ICF World Championship competitions for sprint, distance and technical classes, as well as junior, open and masters’ categories. There is also a fun race for inflatables scheduled in order to promote and encourage spectators with less experience to give SUP a try.

Lake Balaton, Hungary

Striking Venue:  Lake Balaton, Hungary

Lake Balaton is one of the most popular destinations in Hungary. Thousands of people visit the Hungarian Sea each summer to enjoy its beaches for a great holiday. This 77KM long lake is the largest lake in all of Central Europe covering 594 full square miles. In addition to idyllic weather and a welcoming environment, the Hungarian Sea is also popular for its pristine, clean air. The proximity of the Bakony and the Alps give the air quality around Lake Balaton one of the cleanest in the country.

The capital of Balaton is Balatonfüred. This small town of 13,500 inhabitants, on the north shore of Lake Balaton, is surrounded by picturesque, sloping hills. The landscape and backdrop of the town captivates all who visit here due to its mountainous region to the north, and the beautiful lake on the south side of Balatonfured.

Balatonfüred is known for its climate, which is very similar to the Mediterranean. People say the sun shines somehow more gently here. Balatonfüred and its surrounding settlements lie in an area known as “Balaton Riviera”.
