Winter on the North Shore and the chaos that comes with it is in full swing.

The Vans Pipe Masters wrapped yesterday and Oahu surfers dominated. John John Florence took the win for the men while Moana Jones Wong took home the women’s trophy.

Meanwhile, Waimea Bay was crowded on Friday as people gathered for the opening ceremony of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

North Shore charger Koa Rothman made the rounds between both events and documented it all in his latest vlog above.

He captioned it:

“What it was like surfing the Pipe Masters and what we think about it pt. 1”

The video opens with Rothman at Waimea Bay for the opening ceremony of The Eddie.

But, he’s already sidetracked by his impending Pipe Masters heat with Eli Olson, Makai McNamara, and Jamie O’Brien. He says to the camera:

“I have a very intense heat tomorrow at the Pipe Masters.

“It’s going to be pretty gnarly. It’s the only heat in the Pipe Masters that’s all Hawaiians from here and from North Shore.

“There’s no priority, so it’s gonna make this a f*cking dog fight.”

After the heat, Rothman’s not exactly thrilled, but in the end, he finds solace surfing “pumping” Rocky Point.

Before he paddles out, he says:

“We’ve got the squad about to just unleash on Rocky Point. We got all the Florences, Nate, John, Ivan, Eli, and your boy, Koa.

“And it’s pumping, all-time. We all just surfed our heat at the Pipe Masters, round two, and Rockies is pretty much as good as it gets.

“We’re all gonna go out and have a great time.”
