An historic convergence of large, long-period swells generated by Hurricane Marie and extraordinarily high seasonal tides triggered severe coastal flooding, dramatic beach erosion, and perilous surf conditions across Southern California over Labor Day Weekend.
From Ventura County down through Orange County and San Diego, heavy ocean surges breached coastal seawalls, flooded low-lying public parking lots, and directly threatened multi-million-dollar beachfront residences along the immediate shoreline.
Among the most dramatic scenes unfolded in Seal Beach, where roaring whitewash repeatedly overflowed the shoreline, surging deep into beachfront parking areas and surrounding neighborhood streets. Check out the scene below.
In one wild moment recorded by eyewitnesses and broadcast by local news outlets, an SUV was nearly swallowed by the encroaching high surf as churning ocean water swept across the sand and rapidly inundated the asphalt parking stalls.
Describing the sudden, overwhelming impact of the tidal surge, local news reporters on the scene observed:
“The ocean surged right over the sand berm, turning the parking lot into a churning saltwater lake in seconds and trapping parked cars before owners could even grab their keys.”

Recognizing the immediate danger of the vehicle being dragged out to sea or permanently buried in saturated sand, a group of quick-thinking bystanders stepped up to help. Wading through knee-deep, foamy saltwater, the men joined forces to muscle the trapped car out of the sand and rising ocean water, successfully pushing it uphill onto dry pavement before total destruction occurred.
The Seal Beach rescue was emblematic of a chaotic, high-stakes holiday weekend up and down the California coastline. Lifeguards worked tirelessly around the clock, executing hundreds of ocean rescues as treacherous rip currents and heavy 10-to-15-foot shorebreak pounded popular beach breaks.
Meanwhile, municipal public works crews deployed heavy bulldozers to construct massive emergency sand berms to protect low-lying oceanfront homes from tidal inundation. As Hurricane Marie’s powerful swell continues to churn offshore, emergency officials urge beachgoers to maintain a safe distance from the shoreline, obey posted warnings, and never underestimate the power of the ocean
