There’s a great and entertaining video series from Wired magazine.
It features celebrities and various luminaries, as they pull up Google and answer the most commonly asked questions about themselves, often of the comical or rumor mill variety, per the search engine’s autocomplete function.
But what if someone took that same premise, and applied it to surfers?
Well, Los Angeles-based surf filmmaker, Brad Jacobson, did just that and, as expected, the most common questions people asked about surfers were absurd and comical.
Like: Do surfers wear goggles?
To which, Brad answered:
“No. And if you’re thinking about starting to surf, don’t wear goggles.”
Do surfers smoke weed?
“I know the projection of surfers are, like, druggies and weed-smokers. And yeah, surfers do smoke weed, but I don’t know if more surfers smoke weed than any other profession. That’s kind of a trick question. Some do, some don’t; same thing with everyone in the world.”
Do surfers live longer?
“You’ve got me stumped on that one. I don’t think there’s any record of that; I don’t think there’s any correlation between surfing and living longer.”
Do surfers wear life jackets?
“Generally, I’m going to say ‘no’ on this question. There are big-wave surfers who will wear inflatable vests, but 99% of the population does not wear them. You have the one-offs of these guys surfing these huge waves that need to have reinforcements with a life vest. But generally, no.”
Do surfers pee in their wetsuits?
“Oh, man. I don’t. But yes. 99% of the people I know who surfs pees in their wetsuits. Yeah, there’s a lot of pee floating around. Don’t drink the water when you’re out there, I guess?”
There’s more. It goes on and on.
