If you’re unfamiliar with the Outer Banks of North Carolina, you might assume it’s an easy place to score.

The truth is, it’s far from it.

With 200 miles of coastline and ever shifting sand, finding “the” bar on any given swell is a skill all in itself. Guys like Brett Barley will go on reconnaissance missions days before each swell just to get an idea of where the best sand might be, that way he isn’t driving around and losing his mind when the surf is finally pumping.

Last week, when the east coast was hammered with the “swell of all south swells”, Barley and Cam Richards were prepared. They had a gameplan. Knew their sandbars. Had the 4×4’s all gassed up.

And yet, they still spent half their morning bouncing between beaches, before deciding to paddle out at the first spot they checked. While the old adage, “never leave waves to find waves” is certainly relevant here, all is well that ends well, and the pair were eventually rewarded with a window of pumping right tubes.

While the OBX were a far cry from New Jersey, this is still a rad and realistic breakdown of the day from Barley, and a very worthy watch.
