A new drone video captured off the Southern California coast shows a swimmer surrounded by six juvenile great white sharks in nearshore waters.
Filmed by renowned marine documentarian Carlos Gauna (known online as The Malibu Artist), the footage reveals a rare, tense scene: rather than exiting the water when lifeguards paddled out on paddleboards to warn him, the swimmer knowingly remained in the ocean, at times coming within a single body length of the apex predators.

As Gauna narrated in his video breakdown of the surreal day of shark-spotting:
“In just one morning, I had watched great white sharks share the water with surfers, boats, jet skis, and dolphins. But none of those encounters prepared me for what would happen next.”
Through his high-definition drone lens, Gauna has documented hundreds of instances where beachgoers unwittingly shared the ocean with great white sharks. However, this encounter stood out because the swimmer was fully aware of his surroundings.

Among the six sharks circling below was a juvenile Gauna recognized and nicknamed “Tina.” Gauna has observed Tina over an extended period, noting that she has grown increasingly comfortable sharing coastal waters with humans without displaying aggressive behavior.
“Her comfort around people was visible,” Gauna noted.
The encounter comes during a particularly “sharky” summer season across Southern California, where elevated sea surface temperatures fueled by a strong El Niño pattern have drawn unprecedented numbers of young white sharks into shallow nursery zones.
Yet despite the high density of predators and swimmers sharing the same stretch of coast, Gauna offered a reassuring reality check:
“Despite how close and often people and sharks come together in the water, actual bites remain remarkably rare.”
In fact, statistically speaking, an average American has a significantly higher chance of dying while mowing their lawn than being attacked by a great white shark.
Perhaps the swimmer was well aware of those favorable odds—or perhaps he was simply captivated by a once-in-a-lifetime chance to swim with Tina.
