Compared to its northern and southern counterparts – Orange County below, Ventura above – Los Angeles isn’t much of a surfing hotbed when it comes to producing quality waves and quality surfers.

But that doesn’t stop hordes of surfers, many of whom are still beginners, to paddle out in droves when there’s even just a smidgen of swell in the ocean. The preferred watering hole for these throngs of giddy surfers? El Porto in Manhattan Beach.

“Pure Surfing Chaos in LA,” is what local surf filmer, Brad Jacobson, titled his latest clip above from El Porto.

And he couldn’t have been more on point. There’s soft-tops, multiple people on one wave, drop-ins, collisions…yeah, like Brad said, chaos. But then again, it’s just another day surfing in LA.

“I think it was even more chaotic than I imagined,” Brad narrates.

“There were people littered everywhere. The waves themselves…yeah, they had some size and some of them were actually pretty good. But overall, it had a weird wonkiness to it. Most would feather out back, then the inside would get super steep and closeout.

“But the pure chaos of people surfing on top of each other – that’s just something to watch.”

Cowabunga, Los Angeles.
