A new shark warning at one of California’s most notorious shark-attack locations has surfers and swimmers on notice.
Pacific Grove Police are advising people to avoid the water at Lovers Point in Monterey Bay following reports of heightened shark activity. The beach itself remains open.
“Lover’s Point Beach is open; however, water activities are not recommended due to the presence of sharks in the area,” the city announced.
According to reports, the advisory followed reports of a seal being bitten and blood appearing in the water. Officials have not identified the shark involved.
The warning comes amid extraordinary sightings nearby.
On Tuesday, October 20, whale-watching operator Sanctuary Cruises flew a drone over waters near Marina State Beach, several miles north of Lovers Point, and discovered five great whites approximately 200 yards offshore.
“Within minutes of looking around, we spotted multiple great white sharks just a few hundred yards from the beach,” the company wrote, estimating an enormous adult female at “14–16 feet.” Four juveniles were also present.
California State Parks separately issued an advisory at Marina after a white shark was filmed breaching behind a beachgoer.
“It is that time of the year,” California State Parks Chief Ranger Mike Dippel told KSBW, explaining that fall brings white sharks back to the Central Coast.
But the latest warning carries particular weight at Lovers Point.

On December 21, 2025, 55-year-old open-water swimmer Erica Fox disappeared during a group swim with the Kelp Krawlers. Witnesses reported a shark breaching with what appeared to be a person in its mouth.
After an extensive search, her body was recovered six days later, roughly 25 miles away near Davenport. Her husband said investigators identified her in part through her watch and a shark-deterrent band still fastened around her ankle.
The coroner later confirmed she died from injuries and submersion caused by a shark attack.
Another Kelp Krawlers swimmer, Steve Bruemmer, survived a severe great white attack at Lovers Point in 2022.
Shark attacks remain exceptionally rare. But with a new advisory in effect, officials are urging ocean users to stay ashore.
