Mia Brookes, the young and accomplished female snowboarder who has been breaking records and making waves all year long, has now been honored as the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year for 2023. Notably, Archer Penny Healey and wheelchair basketball player Charlie McIntyre were also contenders for the prestigious award.

Securing the title of the youngest world champion in snowboarding and the first in slope style for Britain, Brookes achieved gold just a month after turning 16. In her inaugural season at this elite level, she secured World Cup silver in both slope style and big air.

Brookes, who embarked on her snowboarding journey at the tender age of 18 months (what?!) made her World Cup debut in October 2022. Following her nomination for the Young Sports Personality accolade, she wrapped up her season by claiming the overall freestyle snowboard World Cup big air title. Throughout the 2023 big air World Cup competitions, she consistently ranked in the top five, securing a remarkable second place finish in Edmonton earlier in the month and ultimately topping the rankings.

At the World Championships in Georgia in February, Brookes initially held the silver medal position with a score of 86.41 after her first run, trailing New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott’s 88.78. However, her bold decision to attempt the Cab 1440, a highly intricate four-rotation 1440 switch named after skateboard legend Steve Caballero, paid off with a winning score of 91.38.

The judging panel for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award included former England footballer Theo Walcott, triple European champion sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, double European champion diver Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix, and double Paralympic and world champion rower Lauren Rowles. Representatives from BBC Sport, Blue Peter, and the Youth Sport Trust also contributed to the selection process.
