A significant section of the cliff at Steamer Lane gave way on Sunday afternoon, further highlighting concerns of the ongoing instability of the famed Santa Cruz righthander.
According to a report posted to Instagram, the latest collapse occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on August 30, with a dangerously large portion of the cliff breaking away and falling very close to the surfers in the lineup.
The collapse is the latest reminder of the continuing erosion affecting the cliffs surrounding Steamer Lane. The area is frequently exposed to powerful Pacific swells, heavy winter weather and ongoing coastal erosion, all of which can contribute to serious instability along the cliff face.
