It’s Wedge season, baby.

SoCal’s premier neck-cracking, board-snapping, and ego-checking shorebreak wave came alive with a season-opener swell on April 27th. And with the swell came loads of the Wedge’s patented wipeouts; hit play below and commence the cringing.

Bodyboarders, skimboarders, surfers…nobody is safe from the inevitable beatings that come with a session at the Wedge. As for us, the viewers, it’s the surfing equivalent of schadenfreude.

Amidst the chaos, the North Shore’s Jamie O’Brien made his annual pilgrimage to the Wedge – picking off a few tubes from the heavy crowds, and taking the requisite beatings, too.

“The Wedge is firing [right now],” J.O.B. said in his video recap of the swell. “We’re making it in and out of barrels. This is what it’s all about. It’s solid six-foot Wedge. It’s no joke, but still kind of small. I wish it was 40 feet today.”

The season-opener swell wasn’t all-time Wedge by any means. But it was a good start to the season, and there appears to be more south swell on the way.

According to Surfline forecaster, Matt Kibby:

“The South Pacific has been a busy basin lately. A stretch of what is likely to be at least ten days of overlapping SSW swell is set to kick off as the initial pulse peaks late this week. Conditions are set to straighten out just in time, providing plenty of options no matter which side of Pt. Conception you find yourself.”

So, cancel that chiropractor appointment; Dr. Wedge is doing adjustments for free.
