From San Diego to San Francisco, multiple runs of massive swell have been pummeling California over the past couple days, and continuing into the New Year.

Has it been all-time for surfers? Not really. Has it been chaotic and dangerous and detrimental to coastal properties, infrastructure, and erosion-prone areas? Absolutely.

But, from a surfing perspective, if you know where and when to look, there have been some windows of good, clean, totally ginormous waves. Like below:

The clip comes from San Diego native, self-proclaimed “King of Wavepools,” perennial sh*t stirrer, and aerial innovator, Jacob “Zeke” Szekely.

More specifically, it shows the XXL pulse from December 28th, and one of the few places in San Diego that can actually handle such magnitude of swell: Blacks Beach.

As Zeke claimed, it was “20 to 30 feet.”

Heavy claim? Perhaps. Hyping it for the views? Likely. Overestimated? Maybe a tad.

Regardless, it’s a pretty site seeing mountains of water detonating on the wide-open beachbreak at Blacks as a strawberry sherbet sunset lights up over the coast.

For more on the swell, and what to expect in the coming days, here’s the latest update from Surfline:

It’s already been an eventful week in California – especially north of Point Conception – and there is more to come. Finding the windows of favorable wind in between storms will be a challenge. Things to note:

-Solid to locally XXL W-WNW swell Thu-Fri for California
– Stormy wind for NorCal with some brief windows, SoCal AM wind is generally light
– Another big W swell arrives over the weekend but wind is pretty tough statewide

Stay tuned, and stay safe.
