In the realm of riding massive waves, Kai Lenny showcases a noticeable influence from snowboarding.

An evident resemblance can be observed when he gracefully maneuvers through colossal water mountains, reminiscent of carving down snow-covered peaks. Additionally, he incorporates imaginative lines and executes awe-inspiring aerial maneuvers, reflecting the inspiration drawn from snowboarders.

Consequently, surfers, particularly those inclined towards aerial tricks and conquering big waves, often seek inspiration from the world of snowboarding. This pursuit leads individuals like Kai to embark on occasional journeys to snowy terrains, seeking to diversify their skills and acquire knowledge that can potentially enhance their performance in the water.

Episode four of Red Bull’s captivating “Life of Kai” series captures one such expedition, as Kai Lenny, the talented waterman from Maui, ventures to Alaska to join forces with legendary snowboarder Travis Rice. To witness their remarkable collaboration, simply press the play button below.

“Getting the double [backflip] on a wave, it’s kind of stalled a little bit,” Kai says. “You just don’t have that many opportunities. Even though I didn’t come away with the cleanest double rotation, the fact that I was so comfortable going that fast at a ramp, flying that high, and going that far, actually aiming it to where you need to land it on a wave is going to be far less scary.”
